"In our family, volunteering is almost genetic," says Master-Corporal Annie Jodrey, an Avionics Systems Technician working as an instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering, at 16 Wing, Borden.  "When we were kids, my mother did a lot of volunteer work in our small community, and we grew-up helping with her at the church, at the food bank and with various charities."

Today, Master-Corporal Jodrey upholds the family tradition and continues to help others any which way she can.  Within the short period since her arrival in Borden a few years ago, Annie has already made a name for herself as a dedicated volunteer, both at work and in the local community.

Whether she is seen rearranging bookshelves at the Base Library, leading a group of Girl Guides, cooking chili for an event at the Youth Centre, helping with the sports at the annual Air Cadet Activity Day, or even repainting the Child Care Centre; she does it all with a smile. But if you ask her which one of these activities she prefers, the answer is quick: "Helping-out at the Library! I love being around books. I love reading... my children love reading... we all read a lot in our house!"

Indeed, Annie not only loves reading, but she loves to share her passion for books with others.  At her previous posting, she volunteered her time with the West Hants Literacy Society to teach adults how to read and write.  "There is a great need for volunteers in that area," she explains.  "Most people don't realise how many adults have problems reading and writing, even right here in our region."

Even though Master-Corporal Jodrey does not need any specific reason to commit to her volunteer work, she does find interesting rewards in doing it.  "I think volunteering is good for your heart," she says.  "It helps your blood pressure... and it's usually fun!"
