Operation Nunalivut 2012, which runs from 10 April to 1 May, 2012, in and around Resolute Bay, Nunavut, is a major sovereignty operations conducted every year by the Canadian Forces in Canada’s North.

This year’s operation focuses on the CF demonstrating expeditionary capabilities in response to a simulated whole-of-government safety-driven mission. It involves approximately 150 personnel from the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, Canadian Army, and Canadian Rangers under the command of Joint Task Force (North).

Op Nunalivut, meaning ‘Land that is ours’ in Inuktitut, employs the unique capabilities of 440 Transport Squadron, which operates in the extreme environment of the high Arctic. 440 “Vampire” Squadron, based in Yellowknife, N.W.T., falls under command of 17 Wing Winnipeg, Man. It is the only formed CF unit that is based full-time in the North and operates the Canadian-designed and produced CC-138 Twin Otters to carry out a wide range of tasks, including airlift, utility and liaison flights in support of Canadian Forces Northern Area.
