Born in Newmarket, ON, CWO Marlene Shillingford enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces on October 1, 1986 at Toronto, ON as an Airframe Technician. Shortly after enrollment she received her basic training in Cornwallis, NS. Upon graduation she attended basic occupational training (QL3) at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering (CFSATE) in Borden, ON.

CWO Shillingford started her career on the CT-114 Tutor at CFB Moose Jaw in July 1987. After obtaining qualifications and gaining valuable experience she was selected as the first female technician of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron – the Canadian Forces Snowbirds for the 1993-1994 show seasons. In 1995 CWO Shillingford was posted to 8 Air Maintenance Squadron (AMS) at 8 Wing Trenton maintaining the CC-130 Hercules. As a Corporal she participated in two international air mobility competitions, several exercises, and mobile repair parties. After a promotion to Master Corporal in 2001 she was a key junior supervisor on a six-month deployment to South West Asia on Op APOLLO, Roto 1 in 2002. Promoted to Sergeant in 2005 she was selected to the Air Command Academy in Borden, ON where she carried out the duties as a Primary Leadership Qualification Directing Staff training future junior leaders and involving them in community service with Habitat for Humanity as the Director of the Student Community Service Program. In 2006, she was selected to return to 431 Squadron - the Canadian Forces Snowbirds to become the first female Snowbird Crew Chief. In 2008 she was promoted to Warrant Officer and posted overseas to Geilenkirchen, Germany with the Canadian Contingent at the NATO Airborne Early Warning ad Control Force. She was employed as a Quality Assurance inspector for propulsion on the NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) and later as a Staff Officer in the HQ A7 Exercises and Training Branch. During her four plus years overseas she was deployed to Mazar-E-Sharif, Afghanistan as the E-3A Component Detachment Chief. While in Germany, she was also the co-chair and chair for two consecutive international Terry Fox committees.

In December 2012 she was promoted to Master Warrant Officer and posted to Asticou in Gatineau, QC where she successfully completed second language training then posted to the Canadian Forces Warfare Centre in Shirleys Bay, Ottawa. CWO Shillingford was employed in the Joint Concept Development and Experiment and J5 Plans Branches before standing up the Operations cell as the Deputy Operations Officer. In June 2014 she was invested into the Order of Military Merit. She was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in June 2017 and posted to 12 Wing Shearwater as the 12 Air Maintenance Squadron Squadron Chief Warrant Officer (AMS SCWO). In March 2019, CWO Shillingford was appointed as Wing Chief Warrent Officer (WCWO) at 15 Wing Moose Jaw.
