Mr. Eugene Melnyk, owner of the NHL Ottawa Senators and Canadian Tire Centre was appointed Honorary Colonel of 414 Electronic Warfare Support Squadron by the Minister of National Defence, the Honorable Rob Nicholson, in September 2014.

Honorary Colonel Melnyk began his business career by creating the medical publishing company Trimel Corp in 1982. Following its sale in 1989, he launched Biovail Corp., a specialty pharmaceutical company focusing on research and development of advanced drug delivery technologies. He served as chairman and CEO he led the growth of the company with operations in North America, Puerto Rico, Ireland and Barbados. He retired as the company’s chairman in 2007. One year later he successfully launched Trimel Biopharmaceuticals, developing products for health and conditions relating to aging and well-being.  Honorary Colonel Melnyk also serves as chairman of privately held PurGenesis Technologies and of Fusion Brands, the commercialized cosmetics company.

Honorary Colonel Melnyk is fully engaged as owner of the Ottawa Senators but also supports a broad range of women’s based hockey initiatives including the Hockey Canada Foundation, the Women’s National Championships, the Ottawa Lady Sens and the Mississauga and Toronto teams of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. In addition, he is a thoroughbred breeder and owner. Melnyk Racing Stables located in Ocala Florida is home to over 300 thoroughbred horses and employs a staff of 60 people.

Honorary Colonel Melnyk supports a variety of community-based causes focusing his philanthropy on children, health care and education. Amongst a wide range of donations he contributed to “Anna House”, a child care facility on the grounds of Belmont Park racetrack. The Ottawa Senators Foundation aims to empower children and youth to reach their full potential by investing in social recreation and educational programs that promote both physical and mental wellness. Finally, as founder, trustee and board member of Providence Elementary School in Barbados Honorary Colonel Melnyk has seen continuous growth in enrollment in the unique learning environment with a challenging academic curriculum guided by the underpinnings of strong core values. The school is now home to more than 300 children.

As a longstanding supporter of the Canadian Armed Forces, Honorary Colonel Melnyk made a surprise visit to Kandahar Afghanistan to deliver special donations of hockey equipment to the troops. He also lead the National Hockey League as the first team to dedicate a home game to honour the men, women and families of the Canadian Armed Forces. Through his efforts and those of the Ottawa Senators, more than $700,000 has been raised to support the Military Families Fund.
