Mr. Gordon Van Tighem

Mr. Gordon Van Tighem was appointed as Honorary Colonel of 440 Transport Squadron, Yellowknife, North West Territories in January 2013.

Honorary Colonel Van Tighem served for four consecutive terms as Mayor of Yellowknife until November 2012. Born in Calgary, Alberta, a fourth generation Albertan, he graduated from the University of Manitoba. He served for 24 years with the Bank of Montreal in marketing management, the last eight years as the Territorial Manager for the Northwest Territories. Retiring in 1999, he became Executive Director of the NWT Community Mobilization Partnership after three years as Chairman of their Volunteer Board, prior to his election as Mayor.

Honorary Colonel Van Tighem is fully engaged in a number of appointments including: Chairman, NWT Public Utilities Board, Chair, Yellowknife International Airshow Society, Director of the Canadian Wildlife Federation; and President of the Fly Kid Foundation. He has been engaged in a broad range of volunteer organizations including Chair of the Northern Forum and member of the Executive Committee of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, President of the NWT Association of Communities, Director of the Northwest Corridor Development Corporation, President of Edmonton Ringette, Scouts Canada, Royal Canadian Flying Club Association and President (1981/84) of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada to name but a few.

Honorary Colonel Van Tighem and his wife Carol reside in Yellowknife where they can take part in their outdoor interests of flying, boating, hunting and visiting their seven grandchildren.
