The Curtiss H-4 became known in the Royal Navy
as the Small America to differentiate it from the H-12 Large America.
The British Admiralty was impressed with the design and requested
Curtiss Company to design a land plane counterpart. Being too busy
with war orders to complete the design, responsibility was given
to its new subsidiary, the Curtis Aeroplane and Motors Company in
Toronto.
