Chief Warrant Officer J.D. Flamand, CD

CWO Flamand was born in North Bay, Ontario and joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a Communication and Radar Technician in 1988. Upon completion of basic training in ERFC St Jean and occupational training at Canadian Forces Base Borden he was posted to 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia where he worked on the CP-140 Aurora as a first and second line technician.

In 1994, CWO Flamand was posted to the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario, where for the next five years he was a Performance Orientated Electronics Training instructor. After passing some of his knowledge to young future technicians he was promoted to Master Corporal and was posted back to Greenwood. 

During the next eleven years he continued working on the Aurora with 14 Air Maintenance Squadron and Maritime Proving and Evaluation Unit conducting various jobs including first line maintenance and test and evaluation projects among others. In July 2002, CWO Flamand deployed to Op Apollo as a member of the Long Range Patrol detachment in response to the 9/11 attacks. In February 2009 he accepted a deployment with Op Athena as part of the Canadian Contingent at Regional Command (South) NATO HQ Kandahar Afghanistan working in the J3/5 Aviation section planning helicopter operations. Promotions to Sergeant and Warrant Officer (WO) were achieved in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

In 2010, CWO Flamand was first introduced to 436 Transport Squadron (436 (T) Sqn) in Trenton, Ontario during the Ops/SAMEO organization integration. The first two years were spent on the hangar floor as crew WO including a deployment to Op Athena/Tactical Airlift Unit as the Deputy/Aircraft Maintenance Officer when the CC-130J was repatriated back to Canada from Afghanistan. The next two years were spent as the Employment and Training Officer which led to his promotion to Master Warrant Officer in June 2014.

CWO Flamand was then posted to the Nation’s Capital Region of Ottawa in HQ under the Chief of the Air Force Staff. He worked on Occupation Structures for all RCAF-managed occupations. In June 2016, CWO Flamand was selected to be the Station Warrant Officer at Canadian Forces Station Alert for a period of six months where he was responsible for the day-to-day station operations and its personnel both military and civilian. He was promoted to his current rank in July 2018 and appointed as 436 (T) Sqn Squadron Chief Warrant Officer.

In 2020, CWO Flamand enjoyed COVID-19 attending Royal Military College virtually completing his Certificate in Advanced Military Studies part of the Non-Commissioned Member Executive Development Program. Upon completion, CWO Flamand was appointed as the Wing Chief Warrant Officer of 2 Wing.
