Chief Warrant Officer Eric Barney, CD

CWO Eric Barney, CD enrolled in the Primary Reserves in 1993 as a Combat Engineer. In 1996 he transferred to the Regular Force as an Electrical Generating Systems (EGS) Technician. Pte Barney was posted to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment on completion of his QL3 course where he completed his apprenticeship and was deployed as part of the NATO Stabilization Force to the Former Yugoslavia in 1997.

Promoted and posted to the 8 Wing Construction Engineers in 1999, he spent relatively little time in Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, attaining his Journeyman qualification and touring the arctic for the better part of 2001, completing a tour to CFS Alert as a Power Plant Operator and leading small upgrade projects in Eureka. Promoted to Master Corporal in 2001, he returned home to Edmonton, AB the following summer again with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment.

Employed as a Section Second in Command (2IC) with the Construction Troop, MCpl Barney completed his Primary Leadership Qualification (Land) in Wainwright, AB and his QL6A in Gagetown, NB. Promoted to Sergeant in 2004, he deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan as part of OP ATHENA Roto 2, where he was employed as the Power Generation Contract Inspector for Camp Julien. Upon his return from Afghanistan, Sgt Barney filled roles both as a Section Commander and the Troop Warrant Officer.

Posted to the CFB Halifax Formation Construction Engineers (FCE) in 2006, Sgt Barney led the EGS Shop for a short time and was promoted to Warrant Officer in 2007. He moved to the FCE Contracts Section, initially as the Contracts 2IC and later as the Contracts Officer. WO Barney deployed to Kandahar for his second Afghan tour in 2010 as a Contract Manager. He was promoted to Master Warrant Officer in January 2011 and spent the rest of his time in Halifax as the Planning MWO.

MWO Barney was posted to CFB Petawawa Base Construction Engineers in 2011 as a Facility Management MWO and the following summer, MWO Barney was posted OUTCAN for one year to the Canadian Embassy Kabul as the Property Specialist. Shortly after his return from Afghanistan, he was appointed to the position of Squadron Sergeant Major for the newly named Engineer Services Squadron in Petawawa in 2014.

CWO Barney was promoted to his current rank in 2015 and assumed the position of 22 Wing Administration and Technical Services Branch Chief Warrant Officer in North Bay ON. He remained in North Bay in order to attend the Continuous French Course and upon completion he was appointed 9 Wing Chief Warrant Officer.
